I hope you read my last post on Jesus as the Former and Latter Rain. If so, you will appreciate these insightful comments by my friend Pearl. I would have just added them to the end of the article, but thought they might get lost, and they are too good to miss.
.I just finished reading your article on your website about the “former and latter rains” spoken of in the Bible.
I really had to chuckle to myself because I had, not long ago, read that same article by DePetra, and I am in total agreement with it.
All that BS of “talking in tongues”, and the “Azuza Street Revival” and the “outpouring of the Spirit in 1948….all Charismatic garbage!!
Paul warned us about wandering off from the “simplicity that is in Christ”, and boy, is that a fact today. And it all comes from today’s “Christian Religion”, when it should NOT be a “religion” at all!!
If you can put a “label” on it, then it’s not Biblical (that is, unless that “label” can be found in the Bible). As you frequently say, “Jesus is all and everything!” What He hasn’t done already, doesn’t need to be done. I don’t think people seem to understand plain English. The words that Jesus told us as He breathed His last were, “IT IS FINISHED.” Period!!
He finished what He started, and then He sent us the Holy Spirit of God (the Spirit of Christ) to be INSIDE ALL OF US to “guide us into all truth”…etc. John 16:13.
But what do “educated-by-men” people do?? They make it as COMPLICATED as possible. And they cause people to “tithe” to pay for their lies! When, in fact, tithing is a “work” that is not in the NT Covenant. Tithing is falling from grace, if you believe you are mandated to do it.
Romans 16:18…For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches DECEIVE the hearts of the simple.”
II Corinthians 11:3….”But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be CORRUPTED from the simplicity that is in Christ.”
THOSE SCRIPTURES SAY IT ALL!! The problem is that Christians don’t READ and STUDY their own Bibles. Or worse, they don’t BELIEVE what it says!! But, they sure will believe the “Book of Enoch”, and all the deceitful books and videos put out by other “men”, won’t they?
When one reads Joel 2:23, he TELLS US what this “former rain and latter rain” is all about:
“Be glad then, ye children of Zion (obedient followers of God): for He HATH GIVEN YOU (past tense) the former rain MODERATELY (not yet in “full measure” as was done on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit of God was given in FULL MEASURE to all believers), and He will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain (OT), and the latter rain (NT at Pentecost) in the first month.”
DePetra explains this beautifully, and very understandably. One is PAST TENSE, and one is FUTURE TENSE. The “latter rain” had to wait until after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But, it did come exactly on time. Jesus had told them to “wait for it in Jerusalem”. It was only a matter of DAYS until the prophecy of Joel would be fulfilled.
And those who actually understand what is written in their own Bibles, will KNOW that Jesus told them EXACTLY when the “Holy Spirit” will come to dwell within men. It’s called “the baptism of the Holy Spirit”, and it happened THAT DAY at Pentecost.
Acts 1:4….”And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem but WAIT for the promise of the Father, which, saith He, ye have heard of me” (regarding Joel’s prophecy of the coming latter rain).
(verse 5)…”For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost NOT MANY DAYS HENCE.”
Being “baptized with the Holy Spirit” DID NOT TAKE 2000 years to be to be accomplished. It happened THAT DAY at Pentecost!
When they were given the “gift of tongues”, it was not gibberish. It was what people HEARD, each in their own language; because many people with many different languages were gathered that day in Jerusalem. It was a mandate from God (OT) that ALL MEN should come to Jerusalem on Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. And this was a huge gathering from all the nations of the world who were followers of God. Many people, speaking many DIFFERENT LANGUAGES were in attendance. And when the disciples told them what had happened, all the people could UNDERSTAND by HEARING what was said in their own dialect and language.
Acts 5-6…”And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews (Judeans), devout men, out of every nation under heaven. (vs. 6) Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that EVERY MEN HEARD THEM SPEAK IN HIS OWN LANGUAGE.
That day was the BEGINNING of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God in believers. From then, it has been continually happening throughout the “Church age”, and it will continue until the harvest during this present age of grace. That is, until the “body of Christ” is completed by God.
Remember how many people were there in the “upper room”? At the beginning of the “latter rain”, there were 120 who received the initial outpouring of the Holy Spirit. This keeps multiplying during this present age until the “body of Christ” is completed. And the number of completion is (symbolically) 144,000, which is also a multiple of 12. The number 12 pertains to God’s government and completion. So, we can see a progression of this Government of God from “120” (notice the “12” with only one zero; to the completion of the “body of Christ” to “144,000” (a multiple of “12” to the highest degree). This is connected to the measure of New Jerusalem (144 cubits) See Rev. 21:17
I’m not sure, but when verse 17 says, “according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.”, I have a strong suspicion that God wants us to notice it is the measure that involves “man” and his salvation progression from “man” to the first resurrection when they become as the “angels” in heaven.
When we go back to Matthew 22:30 we can see a connection:
Jesus is answering the question of whether men will be with their present wives, or which wife (if they’ve married more than once) they will be with after death.
“For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.”
I make that connection, myself. But, others may not. And both those verses talk of “men” being compared to “angels”. If someone has a better fit, I would love to hear it.
GREAT POSTING! SUPERB, in fact!
Thanks Pearl! Excellent addition to the topic!
